Ex Machina

This modern-day story follows Mitchell Hundred who becomes the world’s first and only super-hero (The Great Machine). After he tires of maintaining the status quo, Hundred retires his alter-ego and runs for the Mayor of New York City. Problems begin to pile up when an assassin begins murdering public workers.
Ex Machina is a glimpse into what a super hero and subsequent consequences on the real world. It’s an action packed sci-fi drama exploring the nature of politics in a post 9/11 world.

Paper Girls

In 1988 four pre-teen girls from a fictional Cleveland suburb find themselves colliding with the future. They encounter deformed humanoids, advanced technology, and more questions than answers. It’s an insane journey down a rabbit hole with no end in sight.
If you’re a fan of sci-fi, future possibilities, or a look into the unknown then this is a book for you. Just when you think it can’t get any weirder/crazier it does. This Eisner winner is packed with childhood dreams, nostalgia, and growing up.

Runaways

Set in the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616), every year a group of teenagers get dragged along to an annual “charity event” with their parents. One year, they decide to spy on their parents, discovering their (super) villain inheritance. The kids immediately plan their escape. On the way out, they gather their parents’ weapons and resources.
This is an interesting take on what happens to innocent bystanders in a super-hero universe. It identifies with that inner angsty teen we all had that wanted nothing more than super powers. The series was so popular that even after its cancellation Marvel picked it back up because of the trade sales.

Y: The Last Man

“Y” is the last male alive in a post-apocalyptic world. A mysterious plague whipped out all the Y-chromosome mammals on Earth leaving a republic of Amazonian females ruling the world. It is unclear how “Y” and his pet monkey survived or where the disease originated.
The series won an Eisner Award as well as being nominated for a Hugo Award. If you like dystopian future “what-ifs”, then this book will not disappoint.

Saga

Both sides of an intergalactic-war are threatened when two soldiers from opposing factions fall in love. The politics and propaganda surrounding the war force Alana nor Marko to continually be on the run. Neither can return to their home worlds for fear of capture. They will travel to the ends of the galaxy and do whatever it takes to protect their offspring.
This epic sci-fi/fantasy space-opera has raised the bar for comic book storytelling. The art is incredibly breathtaking. And you’ll fall in love with the most bizarre characters and love every minute of it.
We recommend getting several volumes. Once you start reading this series, you won’t want to put it down. It’s that good.
